Portland ‘Pataphysical Society presents Skincare Tips, a solo exhibition of recent work by Portland-based artist Hannah Piper Burns.

The exhibition features a short series of video poems created by Hannah Piper Burns. Described by that artist as a proprietary blend of commercials, instructional videos, and original text, Skincare Tips pushes the language of self-care beyond the structures of capitalistic consumption and into the alien landscapes contained within our own biology. All music is by Kevin MacLeod.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Hannah Piper Burns operates under an imperative of not “either/or” but “both & yes”. She is guided by the vibrations of her interior life against the forces and instruments of popular culture, and her project-based practice evokes ambivalent embodiment, intimacy with complicity and metaphysical mundanity. She plays fast and loose with the idea of mediums and materials. She conjures narratives that coalesce and collapse through investigation, juxtaposition, re-contextualization, collage and mimicry. Appropriation is her primary means of accessing and redirecting power. Rhythm is her preferred binding agent.

She has spent the better part of a decade actively and collaboratively organizing art events, curating exhibitions and programming experimental media. In 2015 she co-founded Compliance Division, a project space operating out of her home in Portland, OR. Recently, she has exhibited work at Tritriangle in Chicago, IL, Reed College in Portland, OR, Indie Bits in Columbia, SC and online at ACRETV.org.
